One way that cities can become more water efficient is by using rainwater in place of freshwater to do things such as water the lawn, flush the toilet, and cool heating towers. This water, known as purple water (e.g., when rainwater is captured and used), helps preserve freshwater resources, reduce energy consumption, and lessen the demand on city infrastructure. San Antonio has a series of purple pipes that transport the purple water to users throughout the city.
